The Main Branch of the New Hanover County Public Library is located on Chestnut Street, having moved there into a converted department store in 1981. However, the actual building was constructed during the 1950's.
It is reputedly haunted by the apparitions of a "short woman" known to be a local historian; and a fading, indistinct figure. Various sounds are heard on the second floor, as if books are being put on shelves, pages being flicked through and the book shelves being knocked. Disembodied footsteps have also been reported.
Other effects include the opening drawers and case files.

The Price-Gause House was constructed around 1855-1860 by Colonel William Jones-Price. According to accounts, it was built on a burial ground known as Gallows Hill - a site of public executions.
The Price family reported phenomena shortly after moving in, and this continued as they owned the house until 1990. They claimed to experience audible effects such as footsteps, tapping, bumps and bangs; the smells of pipe smoke and sweet potatoes; lights and taps operating on their own; and the movement of objects in various rooms.
The apparition of a man and woman in "period clothing" have been reported. In the 1960's, a photograph was taken which was claimed to show a human shape. Amateur investigators have since claimed to have obtained EVP recordings and photgraphic anomalies.
The property is privately owned and NOT open to the public.
